Soo Yew has a diverse practice with a primary focus in civil and commercial litigation. In addition to managing litigation matters, he also provides strategic advice to multinational corporations and domestic clients on corporate and employment matters.
Prior to co-founding Tan, Siew & Lee (TSL Legal), Soo Yew honed his skills in one of the largest law firms in Malaysia where he handled various dispute resolution matters with a primary focus in insurance law.
Soo Yew’s areas of practice includes shipping and maritime disputes, international trade, defamation, professional disciplinary actions, divorce, employment disputes, civil fraud, and contractual and commercial claims. Throughout his legal practice, he has successfully represented clients in Malaysian courts, acting as both sole and co-counsel in trials and hearings.
A proud alumnus of University Malaya, Soo Yew earned multiple dean’s list honours.
Soo Yew is Fluent in written and spoken English, Bahasa Malaysia, and Chinese (including Hokkien).
- Advised freight forwarders in international trade disputes, negotiating and securing favorable commercial settlements with minimal costs.
- Advised multinational companies in cross-border transactions involving the sale and lease of marine equipment.
- Successfully defended a medical practitioner facing potential license suspension for the alleged breach of confidentiality in professional disciplinary proceedings.
- Advised leading multinational insurance companies on general insurance claims, discontinuation of insurance schemes, setting up of corporate office, and regulatory compliance on provision of insurance policies.
- Conducted trials and hearings as counsel of a complex defamation case involving local Malaysian celebrities and successfully securing injunctions against the defendants. Reported judgment: [2023] CLJU 203
- Successfully acted for an executive director of a Malaysian public listed company in the broadcast industry to secure a multi-million-dollar severance package.
- Represented and advised a member of the Malaysian royal family and a related public listed company in a defamation case revolving disputes under securities law.
- Advised both domestic individuals and multinational companies on issues relating to employment law including retrenchment, termination and dismissal of employees.
- Assisted in a shareholder’s dispute involving forgery and fraud for an international client.
